Sunday Song Lyric:

In June, the Songwriters Hall of Fame will bestow the Hal David Starlight Award on John Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls. The relatively new award is given to "gifted songwriters who are at an apex in their careers and are making a significant impact in the music industry via their original songs." Among the songs for which Rzeznik is receiving notice is "Iris," a song composed for the "City of Angels" soundtrack he reportedly wrote in about four minutes. Here's a taste of the lyrics:

And I'd give up forever to touch you 'Cause I know that you feel me somehow You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be And I don't want to go home right now . . .

And I don't want the world to see me 'Cause I don't think that they'd understand When everything's made to be broken I just want you to know who I am

Here are the full lyrics and the video.

"at an apex in their careers"? So they're looking for people who are going to go downhill from here?

Ever since songwriters started writing songs,
They have written songs about the rose.
Red roses, blue roses, old roses, new roses,
Roses from the north and south and west,
But here is the rose song that I love the best.

Show me a rose,
And I'll show you a girl who cares.
Show me a rose,
Or leave me alone.

Show me a rose,
And I'll show you a storm at sea.
Show me a rose,
Or leave me alone.

She taught me how to do the tango,
Down where the palm trees sway.
I called her Rose-a-mir,
And she called a spade a spade.

Show me a rose,
And I'll show you a stag at bay.
Show me a rose,
Or leave me alone.

One night in Bixby, Mississippi,
We watched the clouds roll by.
I said "My dear, how are you?"
And she whispered "So am I"

Show me a rose,
And I'll show you a girl named Sam.
Show me a rose,
Or leave me alone.

Show me a rose,
A fragrant rose.
Make believe that you don't know me,
Until you show me
A rose.

"John Rzeznik joins the prestigious company of Rob Thomas, Alicia Keys, John Mayer and John Legend as past recipients of the Hal David Starlight Award. "

Given the list above, calling this award a joke is redundant. :)

Always hated that song...

The best video to post for this song was for the time when Howard Stern had the Goo Goo Dolls play for an outlandishly gay-themed dance party: Rzeznik could barely get through the song without cracking up while watching the (ridiculously-dressed) couples awaying to the music.

Better songs have been written and performed by Homer Simpson.

I agree with those thinking the Goo Goo Dolls are awful.

Alicia Keys is talented. I dont know much of his music myself, but I hear the same about John Legend.

I cant say anything nice about most of what I've heard of John Mayer, but I did hear an album of him playing blues that was surprisingly good.

A much better song writer gets a much better award:

On March 1, 2007, Paul Simon, one of America's most respected songwriters and musicians, was announced to be the recipient of the first annual Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.

i have to agree that the goo goo dolls sons pretty much suck. and while i respect john mayer as a guitarist, and a guy who was written some pretty decent songs...

"waiting for the world to change" possibly has the most insipid lyrics i have ever heard in a song that is trying to sound serious. i'm all for lyrics that are funny, ironic, simple, etc. when they are not trying to be pretentious (the ramones were masters at this). but "waiting for the world to change" is terrible.

the goo goo dolls songs are just bland, boring , and they sound the same.
