VC March Madness Pool:

The folks at Armchair GM have invited me to chair the first ever VC March Madness pool. We'll post the details on how to sign up once the brackets are announced. Go Mason!!

How much is the pot?

Can there even BE a pot? Has anyone checked statutes on Internet Gambling? See, e.g., 18 USC Sections 1084 and 1955, 31 USC Section 5363 (not counting any applicable state laws).

$200 a bag. Good Stuff too.

C'mon, ChrisIowa, you're making me feel WAY old -- I remember the days when $200 would buy you 2 pounds of decent Mexican, or enough for a pound of real good Jamaican plus a quart of Jose Cuervo to cool the burn in your throat.

Actually I have no idea of the current price but picked a number out of the air.

How about a prize? A week of guest-blogging for whoever wins? Obviously the administrators would want to have editorial control, but it seems like a fairly innocuous prize which might make for some interesting blogging.

Oh, and go Duke.

Permit me to petition the Chair to adopt a one-bracket-per-entrant rule. I understand the argument that an entrant who "buys" multiple bracket sheets "pays" more entry fees and increases his odds of winning in exchange for assuming more risk. However, I think allowing a participant to balance one sheet against the other to increase his odds of winning (i.e., "I'll pick Memphis v. UNC for the final in my first bracket sheet and UCLA v. Mason in my other") decreases the role true college basketball knowledge plays in the selection of a winner. The multiple-brackets-per-entrant trend is dangerous and should be stopped. The VC and Chairman Zywicki can strike the first blow for fairness.

On the other hand, I'm glad to be disabused of this theory by the many economists who'll be participating in this pool.

Drake's been ranked in the Top 25 all year. Can the Bulldogs even be considered a true Cinderella at this point? Now, if Illinois State (the #2 team in the Valley) goes on a tear, that would certainly be more noteworthy.

Not quite. Drake only reached the top 25 after they won 20 games in a row.

I am now a card-carrying member of the Drake alumni association. I have three degrees, I got the third degree from Drake. Or something like that.

So when the Alumni Assn sent me a card I put it in my wallet, so I could say I was "card-carrying."

"decreases the role true college basketball knowledge plays in the selection of a winner."

Y'all have too much time on your hands if you can apply real knowledge to a bracket. In college, when I had too much time on my hands, I scored between 49 and 57 games called correctly. Nowadays, it's a crapshoot. I don't think I've broken 30 since my first kid was born 9 tourneys ago.

That said - Boiler Up!

(Don't get me started on the decline of officiating. I can't get over the addition of the shot clock and the removal of traveling from whatever "rule book" refs refer to these days. I even remember when jumping into defenders would be called an offensive foul!)

Duke will be lucky to make it to the Sweet 16 if they play like they did in the last 5 min of the UNC game.

I guess we'll see Sunday.

BTW: (Watch out for Clemson and Vanderbilt)

Joe Lunardi has Mason as a 12 seed playing Drake. Not a matchup that I'd be particularly happy with.

WHOI Jacket,
Didn't see the game, but if I'm being honest, I'd agree with you. Fortunately, this is the internet, and I don't have to be honest.
