Taiwan, Israel, and Hungary:

Today I appeared on the Amy Oliver Show, on KFKA in Greeley, Colorado. We discussed Taiwan's stuggle for self-determination; the half-hour MP3 is here.

Perhaps you've been wondering when you will be able to read a Hungarian translation of my Volokh Conspiracy post from the summer of 2006, UN an Accomplice in Hezbollah Kidnappings. I'm happy to announce that your waiting is over. The Hungarian translation is here; if you read Hungarian, then make sure to check out the rest of Vilmos Soti's interesting website.

"Taiwan's stuggle for self-determination": lets hope that it's less exciting than the Confederacy's.

Huh...how is Taiwan's situation comparable to the Confederacy's? Even aside from the slavery issue, the states that later formed the Confederacy had considerable political clout within US political systems up until the final break; political deals like the Missouri Compromise and the Compromise of 1850 were designed to placate both the North and South and postponed the ultimate conflict. When Taiwan's partisans form half the members of China's legislature, let me know.

If you merely meant to imply that Taiwan's struggle for self-determination may lead to a horrific military conflict, compare it to the nationalist movement in Serbia prior to the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand or something. There's no need to drag in the complex moral and political issues behind the American Civil War.
